Technology Use in Korean EFL Pronunciation Intervention Studies: A Systematic and Meta-Analytic Review

ABSTRACT

This study systematically reviews L2 English pronunciation interventions in the Korean EFL context, focusing on technology use. 116 Korea Citation Index (KCI)-accredited journal articles published between 2003 and 2025 were analyzed. The studies were classified as Computer-Assisted Pronunciation Training (CAPT) or non-CAPT and coded for type of technology-mediated feedback, pronunciation skill focus, and target pronunciation features. Non-CAPT studies were about twice as common as CAPT studies. Slightly more than half of the CAPT studies utilized automatic assessment, while the remainder utilized speech visualization and manipulation. Across the dataset, production was more frequently measured than perception, and segmental features were the most frequent pronunciation targets, with CAPT studies showing a higher concentration on segmental training. A meta-analysis comparing Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR)-based and non-ASR-based CAPT showed positive effect sizes for both categories, with a significantly larger effect size for non-ASR-based CAPT under a random-effects model. The findings cautiously suggest that technological advancements do not necessarily correspond to greater learning gains and highlight the need to examine pronunciation targets and feedback design in technology-mediated interventions.
